Counter Flow Wood Pellet Cooler Introduction
A Pellet Cooler is a specialized machine used to reduce the temperature and moisture content of freshly made pellets, improving their durability, hardness, and storage stability. It is essential in wood pellet plants. Fresh pellets exit the wood pellet mill at high temperatures (70-90°C) and with excess moisture (15-17%). If not cooled properly, they can become soft, break easily, and spoil quickly. A pellet cooler lowers the temperature to 3-5°C above ambient temperature and reduces moisture to 10-12%, making pellets more durable and easier to handle.
The counterflow wood pellet cooler is the most common & efficient for cooling large-capacity biomass pellets and wood briquettes to produce high-quality biomass pellets. It works in counter flow cooling principle to cool pellets and prevent pellets cracking and moisture condensation. Economic space occupation and easy operation, the counter flow wood cooler is the ideal cooling equipment for biomass pellets, animal feed, and fertilizer production.

How Does a Counterflow Wood Pellet Cooler Work?
A counterflow wood pellet cooler operates using a reverse airflow system to extract heat and moisture from pellets, where cooling air moves in the opposite direction of falling wood pellets. This method prevents thermal shock and ensures uniform cooling.

1️⃣ Biomass Pellet Feeding:
Fresh pellets from the wood pellet mill enter the top of the cooler’s chamber via a feeder or conveyor.
2️⃣ Counterflow Air Circulation:
Cool air is drawn in from the bottom and moves upward, extracting heat and moisture from the pellets. Pellets cool gradually as they descend, preventing cracking.
3️⃣ Cooling & Moisture Removal:
A counterflow cooling air system blows air through the pellets. Heat is extracted, reducing pellet temperature from 70-90°C to around 25-30°C. Excess moisture evaporates, preventing mold and spoilage.
4️⃣ Pellets Screening & Discharge:
The cooled pellets move toward the discharge outlet and exit automatically through a discharge gate.
5️⃣ Dust Collection And Final Pellet Storage:
An integrated cyclone or dust filter removes fine particles, ensuring clean pellet output. The cooled pellets are now ready for packaging, storage, or further processing.
